Veterans Resource Center
I held as my life's goal to attend and graduate from the US Naval Academy, thus following in my father's Navy footsteps. I come from a family where respect for my parents was something that I learned at a very early age and I held my father's uniform above all else. I remember at a very early age thinking how important it was to apply a spit shine to my father's aviation uniform shoes so he would appear up to snuff. My younger brother, who followed me into active duty as a Navy SEAL, nearly gave his life on many occasions and in many actions all over the world. Ours was, and continues to be, the physical embodiment of a traditional military family that has for generations supplied our sons and daughters to the service of this Nation and the civilian leaders who command our military.

Veterans deserve leaders who will not only take a photo with the troops but who will also offer true respect and leadership to those who have proudly served and protected this great nation and to those who are in uniform today doing the same. I will work to make sure Veterans get the leaders they deserve.

Randy Kuhl Continues His Attack On Veterans... Quoted Saying That Retired Veteran Eric Massa
July 26
HORNELL N.Y. - In a 7/23/07 article in the Hornell Evening Tribune, Randy Kuhl continued his assault on America's Veterans by stating that retired Veteran Eric Massa "doesn't have a job." This is an affront to all retired Veterans and clearly shows Kuhl's inability to grasp the sacrifices of our Veterans
The Petraeus-Crocker Report - 3 of 18 Benchmarks achieved, Congressional Candidate Eric Massa demands that Randy Kuhl change course and support responsible redeployment from Iraq
Sep 11
CORNING N.Y. -- 29th Congressional District Candidate and retired Naval Commander Eric Massa today demanded that his opponent, Congressman Randy Kuhl, change course in Iraq. Yesterday, General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker delivered a chilling report to Congress.

"It is clear after closely watching the testimony yesterday that the surge, which my opponent has wholeheartedly supported, even while being 'skeptical,' has failed," said 24 year Veteran and former Aide to the Commander of NATO Eric Massa. "General Petraeus stated that our military must now hold the current troop surge level until next summer, but I remember reading an article in the Olean Times Herald in August of 2006 where my opponent suggested that we would start bringing the troops home by last Christmas. The conversation about Iraq has indeed taken a turn for the worse. Rather than having the conversation of 'did the surge work or not,' we are now discussing the impossible - namely sustaining the enormous spike in our deployment that's been rapidly breaking our military for an additional year. We don't have the troops to do this and we simply cannot afford to spend anymore American lives on this three way civil war. The longer we stay, the worse it gets and I refuse to sit on the sidelines while American military personnel continue to pay the ultimate price for George Bush and Randy Kuhl's failed strategy in Iraq -- this while the Iraqi government goes on two month vacations."
Military.com: Hefty Pay Gains Urged for Disabled Vets

Vet Commission Backs Hefty Pay Gains, Sweeping Reforms

The first comprehensive review of veterans' disability benefits in 51 years recommends that Congress and the Bush administration support an immediate increase in compensation levels -- of up to 25 percent for the most severely disabled -- to recognize monetarily their reduced quality of life.

The Veterans Disability Benefits Commission's thick report, reflecting more than two years of work, also wants all disabled veterans made eligible for "concurrent receipt" of both disability pay and an annuity based on years spent in service.

Disabled veterans and their families will find much to be pleased about in the report's 113 recommendations, assuming lawmakers and VA follow through on sweeping reforms presented in the report. The commissioners, 12 of whom are distinguished veterans themselves, didn't allow cost considerations to deeply influence their deliberations.
Veterans Day
Nov 11
This weekend, in small towns and in our largest cities, in rural and in urban areas, Americans will be asked to step back and offer public recognition to the Veterans of America's Armed Services. It is fitting and just that we do so for without them there would be no America.

For better or for worse, over the last two years I have gained a public political persona during my bid to represent the 29th Congressional District in Washington. I want to take just a moment to discuss why I believe so many Veterans, especially those like myself who had never have been involved in politics before, are stepping forward to become involved in public policy at all levels of government. It's simple really, the Congress has fewer veterans now than at almost any other time in the history of the country. Veterans are under represented by a huge percentage. As a direct result, the benefits which all Veterans earned and deserve are being denied, compelling them to get involved. What's more, those in power who have never worn a uniform delight in standing in for photos with Veterans -- all the while attacking the service records of those who did and who disagree with them.
Randy Kuhl continues to revise history in Iraq... Eric Massa's vision for withdrawal remains consistent while opponent's timeline never stops shifting
Dec 17
CORNING, NY- Throughout the 2006 and 2008 election seasons, Eric Massa consistently held what has become known as the Biden Plan. This plan for Iraq consists of creating three separate semi-autonomous states, allowing the Iraqi's to form a government of their own choosing and bringing our troops home. This has been contrasted by his opponent's ever shifting withdrawal timeline. On December 16, 2005, Randy Kuhl said he anticipated "a major withdrawal in the next six months," (Corning Leader, 12/16/2005) yet here we are two years later with even higher troop levels and a Member of Congress who continues to vote in favor of this endless war in Iraq.
On the five year anniversary of the war in Iraq, Massa demands change... Joins with fellow Congressional Candidates Dan Maffei (NY-25) and Jon Powers (NY-26) for press conference to demand more targeted funding for Veterans
March 18
CORNING, NY - On Wednesday, March 19th 2008 at 9:00 am, retired Navy Commander Eric Massa will join fellow Congressional Candidates Dan Maffei (NY-25) and Iraq Veteran Jon Powers (NY-26) for a press conference at the Rochester Veterans Outreach Center at 459 South Ave, Rochester, NY 14620. During this press conference, all three candidates will observe the 5th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. Additionally they will be calling on their opponents and the White House to provide more targeted funding for our Veterans.

Since the war in Iraq began on March 19th, 2003, 3,990 American troops have been killed, tens of thousands have been injured and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died. While President Bush and Randy Kuhl continue to block health care for working Americans, deny us the truth of our economic situation, and create more hurdles for Veterans requiring services, they have no problem spending $3 trillion on a war of choice against a country that had no involvement in the 9/11 attacks.

"Those of us that wore the uniform honor our men and women who stood with us," said retired Navy Commander Eric Massa. "Today I call on Randy Kuhl to finally stand up to George W. Bush's failed foreign policy. Since he came into office, Mr. Kuhl has gone out of his way to rubber stamp President Bush's each and every demand for Iraq. We are currently spending almost $6,000 per second in Baghdad while thousands of children right here in Western New York cannot receive access to health care. Additionally, our returning Veterans continue to encounter more and more red tape while trying to receive the long-term care they have earned. This is the hypocrisy of incumbency and we must hold our failed leaders accountable."

WHAT: Congressional Candidates Eric Massa (NY-29), Dan Maffei (NY-25) and Jon Powers (NY-26) will be observing the five year anniversary of the start of the Iraq War and demanding change.
WHERE: The Rochester Veterans Outreach Center - 459 South Ave, Rochester, NY 14620.
WHEN: Wednesday, March 19th at 9:00 am.
Massa announces support for Senator Webb's updated Montgomery G.I. Bill, and demands mandatory full funding for V.A. - In planned D.C. meeting, Eric Massa will stand with Operation Firing for Effect.
April 14
CORNING, NY - Earlier today, 24 year retired Navy Commander Eric Massa announced his full support for Senator Jim Webb's updated version of the Montgomery G.I. Bill. Massa also announced that he will be standing with Veterans advocacy group Operation Firing for Effect (OFFE) in Washington on Tuesday. Massa and the leaders of OFFE will be meeting with Congressional and Senatorial leaders to discuss how we can institute mandatory full funding for the V.A. system. This meeting will occur on Tuesday, April 15th at 1pm at the Cannon Office Building # 334 in Washington, D.C.

"As a Veteran, I know how important the Webb bill and mandatory full funding for the V.A. are, and that is why I am standing with our Veterans," said retired Navy Commander and Congressional candidate Eric Massa. "Right now we are seeing the highest level of returning Veterans since the Vietnam era, and we as a Nation must fulfill our end of the deal. We must help Veterans gain a higher education and institute mandatory full funding for our Veterans services at the V.A. We can accept nothing less."

Reflections on Veterans Day by a Veteran

What Supporting the Troops Really Means
Oct 22 by Eric Massa
If you really want to support the troops you have to do more than just put a magnetic sticker on your vehicle.  Among other things, it means that you stand up for both our troops in the field and for ongoing care for our Veterans at home.  And at a time when we have tens of thousands of new disabled veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, that latter part is especially important.

This weekend has brought some disturbing news for veterans in the 29th District that directly relates to this issue. It appears that the Acute Psychiatric treatment ward at the Canandaigua VA Hospital, just down the road from Rochester, is slated for closure just after the election. (What interesting timing!) This hospital is already the only center of its kind in the area and, in recent years, has faced dramatic cuts in its other medical services. Now, with the impending loss of in-patient psychiatric treatment services, disabled veterans and their families will be forced to travel to as far away as Buffalo.

Defending Congressman Murtha: Why it matters
Aug 6 by Eric Massa
Massa for Congress

Most of you are probably aware of the opposing rallies this past week in Johnstown, PA.   A tiny group of swiftboaters hoping to publicly smear Representative Murtha was countered by a group 10 times bigger rallying in his favor.  (link, link)   I was there and I want to talk about why we have to stand strong against those attacking Murtha.  It's about a lot more than just showing that Democrats are not weak and spineless, though that can be important at times.  Sliming Congressman Murtha is central to coordinated GOP efforts to keep Democrats from retaking congress in November.
A Time to Pause

This weekend I was invited to join two other guest speakers as we dedicated a new Veterans Memorial Park in the small town of Odessa in Schuyler County, 30 minutes to the north of Watkins Glen in the Finger Lakes region of Western New York State.  The request came from the driving force behind the five year project to locate, fund and build this monument - the center piece of which of is a strikingly beautiful bronze statue of a mother eagle protecting two young.

Dissent is Patriotic
March 19 by Eric Massa
First, I want to thank Andrew Horne (KY-03) for joining me today.

This last week while President Bush was visiting New York's 29th district, a marine corporal who served in Afghanistan, Iraq and Ethiopia approached a group of protesters and said (link):

I just wanted to say that a lot of the guys coming back think that you guys don't appreciate our service... Well, when I went into the service, I took an oath to honor the office of the president, and it's disrespectful to hear you be so negative about him. It feels like a personal attack.

'Pet crematorium' complaint leads to Pentagon change  from Other on May 9
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Military cremation procedures have been changed after a soldier complained that his buddy's remains were taken to what appeared to be a "pet crematorium," the Pentagon announced Friday.

An honor guard salutes war dead. Respect issues have been raised by the military's choice of crematoriums.

The Pentagon says that the facility had separate incinerators for animals and humans but that the signage and location of the facility in a warehouse district near Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, did not show the appropriate respect due military personnel who have died while serving their country. Specialist Town Takes His Case to Washington   from Other on Sep 27
On April 9, Spc. Jon Town was featured on the cover of The Nation, in an article that told how he was wounded in Iraq, won a Purple Heart and was then denied all disability and medical benefits. Town's doctor had concluded that his headaches and hearing loss were not caused by the 107-millimeter rocket that knocked him unconscious but by a psychological condition, "personality disorder," a pre-existing illness for which one cannot collect disability pay or receive medical care.

Soon Town became a national figure, the human face of the 22,500 soldiers discharged with personality disorder in the past six years. His story was picked up by the Army Times, Washington Post Radio and ABC News's Bob Woodruff. It was dramatized in a May episode of NBC's Law & Order. And rock star Dave Matthews began discussing Town's plight at every stop in his spring concert series.

Further investigation by The Nation has uncovered more than a dozen cases like Town's from bases across the country. All of the soldiers interviewed passed the rigorous health screening given recruits before being accepted into the Army. All were deemed physically and psychologically fit in a second screening as well, before being deployed to Iraq, and served honorably there in combat. None of the soldiers interviewed during this eleven-month investigation had a documented history of psychological problems.

Yet after they returned from Iraq wounded and sought treatment, each was diagnosed with a pre-existing personality disorder, then denied benefits. As in Town's case, Army doctors determined that the soldiers' ailments were pre-existing without interviewing friends, family or fellow soldiers who knew them before they were wounded in combat. Kuhl awaits Iraq report  from Elmira Star-Gazette on Aug 9
U.S. Rep. John R. Kuhl Jr. does not blindly back President Bush and could change his support for the Iraq war, depending on the findings of a September report, the congressman said Wednesday.

Responding to anti-war protesters who staged a sit-in at Kuhl's district offices in Bath and Fairport on Monday, Kuhl said he remains open-minded about the war but believes U.S. success in Iraq is critical to national security.

Speaking to the Star-Gazette Editorial Board on Wednesday, Kuhl said he reserves judgment on continued U.S. involvement in the region until Iraq forces commander Gen. David Petraeus gives his report to Congress next month on the troop "surge" that was launched late this spring. Full Story
